(Portland, OR) November 13, 2000 – Tomorrow night, Portland State University will honor Portland’s Mauie and Mary Clark for their years of service to the community, with the prestigious Simon Benson Award.

PSU's Simon Benson Awards Dinner, presented by Wells Fargo Bank and Craig Berkman and Associates, honors philanthropists who have made a lasting impact in the region. Mario Cuomo, former governor of New York will give the keynote address at the event. Don Frisbee is also one of this year’s recipients of the Simon Benson Award.

The Clarks established the Clark Foundation in 1968, which focuses on Oregon history and Catholic causes. The foundation has provided support for such organizations as the Oregon Historical Society, the Albertina Kerr Centers for Children, and the Providence Child Center.

Long time supporters of education, the Clarks also have a long history of donating time and resources to area colleges and universities, giving to the University of Portland, Portland State University, Oregon Graduate Institute, Oregon State University and Maryhurst University. In addition, Maurie was an honorary chair for the University of Portland’s campaign, as well as past chair of The Leadership Development Board at Oregon Graduate Institute.

The Award, named for Simon Benson, exemplifies his lasting mark on philanthropic activity in the Portland area. Benson contributed the land and money to build Benson High School, the land for Benson State Park, Multnomah Falls, the Columbia Gorge Highway and Portland’s unique “Benson bubblers.” Wells Fargo Bank and Craig Berkman and Associates are presenting the dinner. Other sponsors include PacifiCorp, Peter and Julie Stott, Willamette Industries, Inc., ODS Health Plans and the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund.
