Over 600 community members, parents, teachers and students will be in attendance Saturday night at the Oregon Convention Center to honor high-achieving Chicano/Latino students from Portland State University.

PSU’s Chicano/Latino Studies program is hosting its seventh-annual gala, “Celebrating Contributions,” Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. Dinner and speakers begin at 7:00 p.m. The event will award scholarships of $1,000 - $5,000 for academic achievement and community involvement to 19 of PSU’s stellar Hispanic students (listed below).

The gala evening includes dinner, dancing and celebrity speaker Lupe Ontiveros, a film and television actress who recently appeared HBO’s Real Women Have Curves, and is well known for her roles in Mi Familia and the Oscar-nominated El Norte. Enrique Castillo, who has appeared in Bound by Honor, Mi Familia, El Norte as well as many other movies, will join Ontiveros as a celebrity guest and master of ceremonies. The local Latin band Alegre will perform at the event.

The Chicano/Latino Studies gala serves as the primary scholarship fundraising event to support Chicano/Latino students at PSU. It recognizes the achievements of the Chicano/Latino Studies program and acknowledges and highlights October as Hispanic Heritage Month.
